A Free Method to Schedule Facebook Updates

Earlier this month, one of my favorite blogs, Make Use Of (.com), published a post about five (5) free methods for scheduling facebooks updates.  You know, for when you want to make updates at a time when you know you won't have access to the internet.  Or just to fool people that you're somewhere else when you're not.  ;) I mention this because I want to introduce a sixth (6th) method using a combination of GMail, Baydin's Boomerang extension for Chrome (and Firefox), and either Posterous or TheFriendMail.  I'm using Chrome so I'll use that to illustrate this to you. Step 1: Download Chrome (or Firefox) if you aren't using it already. Step 2: Go to Baydin's website and signup for Boomerang.  Download the extension when it tells you to and install. Step 3: Reload Gmail. If all's well with the installation, you should have a link to Boomerang in the upper right hand corner of gmail, right next to your google account name. Step 4: Start composing your email message or status update.  You should have a button that says send later.  Hit save first before hitting that button. You'll get the picture below, more or less.  As you can see, you have the option of choosing pre-determined schedules or make your own.  Once you hit confirm, it'll be scheduled to send out at the date and time of your choosing.

Step 5: To confirm your email has been scheduled or to reschedule or cancel an email already scheduled to go out, just click on the Boomerang link at the top right corner of the screen.  It should give you this screen where you have the option to reschedule, send it now or cancel altogether.

You'll have to combine this scheduling method with either Posterous or TheFriendMail to work.  They're both services that require you to sign up and link your Facebook accounts and they're free and they work great by email. Check out the user guide for TheFriendMail.  You'll see how easy it is to use Facebook without even logging in to Facebook.

The side benefit of TheFriendMail is you'll be able to download your friends walls and keep them as backups (sort of) in your email inbox for all time.  ;)
