Resolutions

Who really does resolutions?  I've never done them nor have I been very good at keeping them.  Instead, what I do is just decide to change something and do it.  It doesn't matter the when or the how...  I just do it.  Any day can be new year's day.  Right? May your new year be blessed and happy.  Happy new year, friends!  Thank you for visiting. note:  family picture idea is Dan's.

Rainbow

I've seen a few rainbows before but it is my first time to see a double rainbow today :D one of my friends said that rainbows are elecrtricity O.o is it real? answer me ! Yeah we had a funny converstion of why the raindow is called a rainbow or why there was a rainbow when it didn't rain... Anyways we shooted random thoughts like 'rainbows are rain's bows facing up, ready to fire at sun because he's mad at sun because the sun made the rain stop' well that's just one.   This post was meant to be posted a long time ago... it didn't show due to some technical errors but it's here now.

Excellent Shrimp Service

Excellent Shrimp Service, originally uploaded by Neolex.

I recently bought a kilo of shrimps from the market. By chance I decided to ask if they can remove the shell for me for the same price. The person didn't give any excuse or whatever have you. He just said yes and went about it while I patiently waited. Indeed, this is great service. He definitely deserves a tip, don't you think?

True or False?

The back of an armored truck.  I've always thought of Apple as a PC with a slightly limited view because of its environment.  Though, admittedly, it does have its up sides so I'm not dissing them too much.  The users are another matter entirely where I think the warning to the right is most apt.  If you disagree or agree with me, the comments are open below.

CityScape: (Still) Unidentified Object

It's been over a year since I last saw this thing and then it was still incomplete.  Now that it's complete, I still do not know what it is for.  The inside walls look to have some murals, mosaic or paintings on them.  I was driving, ok?  Best I can describe it to be.  To the right it looks like some sort of walkway leading to the thing.  Do people really go in there?  Satisfy my questions, someone, please tell me what this thing is?

Here's to the Crazy Ones!

Here's to the crazy ones.
The misfits.
The rebels.
The troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.

They're not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them,
disbelieve them, glorify them or vilify them.
About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.

Because they change things.
They invent. They imagine. They heal.
They explore. They create. They inspire.
They push the human race forward.

Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or sit in silence and hear a song that's never been written?
Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?

We make tools for these kinds of people.
Because while some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

! And it's the people who are crazy enough to think they can
change the world who actually do.
-Apple

RIP & Goodbye Steve. Thanks for everything. Even the stuff I hated.

Retirement

This is my all time favorite shirt.  My mom bought it in Hong Kong back in 1993 and I've been wearing it since then.  Every month for at least twice a month I wore this without fail.  Business trips.  Pleasure trips.  Vacations.  You will always find this shirt in my luggage.  Sadly, I have to now say good bye as it's coming apart at the seams.  Maybe I'll wear it for home use only.  It's still ultra comfy.  :D

I do not know what to entitle this . XD

If God created everything , then he created the evil , which means God is evil. "Does cold exist? In fact, cold does not exist . According to the Laws of Physics , what we consider cold in reality is the absence of heat . Does darkness exist? Darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. Evil does not exist . It is just like darkness and cold. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart." -Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

In Pursuit of the Perfect Boiled Egg

I love hard boiled eggs.  They're always a yummy treat for snacks and goes very well with pasta.  However I've always had a problem with the timing since it takes a huge amount of boiling I usually get distracted.  Not anymore.  I've found the perfect timing and technique to get it right each and every time.
  1. You start by putting your eggs in the pot in one layer only with enough water to cover all of the eggs.
  2. Then you set the stove at medium heat and wait for the water to reach a roiling boil.
  3. Once the water's roiling, you count 1 minute after which you turn it off and move the pot to cool.
  4. While cooling, set your timer to 15 minutes while leaving the eggs inside to cook from the residual heat.  Tada!  The perfect hard boiled egg!
I took some time before posting this as I wanted to be sure it works each and every time I make hard boiled eggs.  Enjoy!

Data: Recovered

Back in June I was mortified to realize that because of my eagerness I've lost over 10 years worth of photographs and other files from my hard drive.  That experience has made me realize that I really do a lot of my work in electronic form. I did what most people would not do and I started the recovery process. I had no backups to speak of so getting the data back became an imperative for me.  It's now the end of August and I'm happy to let everyone know that I have recovered all that data completely. Yes, completely.  One hundred percent (100%)!  I've spent the last 3 days checking, re-checking, verifying that each bit and byte is there and accounted for.  Then I've begun the process of backing it all up to a second hard drive. Some of the more important ones I've begun to backup online on my server for off-site backup. Whew...  That was some experience.  Lesson learned... backup, backup and backup some more. Especially if you value your data.

Steve Jobs... The Man Who is Different

Reading about this piece of news made me sad.  I remember the time I started going into computers.  My father bought an Apple ][c.  Revolutionary at the time even if it only had a miserly 48kb of RAM and 1 floppy drive.  I loved it so much that I immersed myself into coding, hacking and reading up on all the tech lore surrounding it.

I first read about the Steve Jobs in Byte Magazine.  It was really an article about the two Steves who founded the company, Apple, Inc.  It moved me to imagine great things and to be first in a lot of things.  Personally and also in business.  To think differently.  Maybe not better than everyone else but certainly different.

It's hard to write about the man that has not yet been written.  Google him and you'll see what I mean.  All I can really say is he continues to inspire me in the things I do with work and other things.  That becaus! e of him I continue to think differently and I am not ashamed of that fact.

He Wishes For The Cloths Of Heaven

[caption id="attachment_1853" align="alignright" width="150" caption="William Butler Yeats (1933)"][/caption] Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,

Enwrought with golden and silver light,

The blue and the dim and the dark cloths

Of night and light and the half-light,

I would spread the cloths under your feet:

But I, being poor, have only my dreams;

I have spread my dreams under your feet;

Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Poop burgers, anyone?

Fascinating how reality is catching up with science fiction these days.  We probably don't have much of a choice as the world's population is getting larger, mortality rates going down, and food getting scarce... Space and resources becoming premium. Japanese scientists were tasked to research on how best to handle the tons of sewage their country produces.  They've come up with an answer in the form of meat made from human wastes.  Watch the video for their explanation.

[flv:turdburger.flv 350 240]

For now, I can imagine eating meat or burgers made from poop feeling weird and yucky, but I have no doubt it will become normal in the future.  Just like drinking water recycled from sewage will also be normal.  Can you picture all this? It's interesting, isn't it?   Trivia:  Did you know Frank Herbert has written about recycling sweat, dead bodies and human wastes in his Dune novels?  The movie Soylent Green also features such recycling technology.  And that Singapore recycles waste water for drinking? Happy Fathers Day!

"There is something ultimate in a father's love, something that cannot fail, something to be believed against the whole world." ~ Frederick W. Faber

Its Fathers day once again and again I'm spending it alone.  At home.  No point in getting all sappy and depressed by going out to the malls and seeing all the dads with their kids. I did celebrate, though.  I went to the mall yesterday and watched Green Lantern.  In 3D, no less. So there, no need to feel sorry for me, right?  Still wish I could have watched it with my kids.  I'm sure they would have loved it equally.  They never grew up with comic books.  Manga, yes.  Comic books, no. Most of all, I miss my own father.  Wish he were still here.   Note:  Picture sourced using FlickSourcer.

Related but Not

Forty is the old age of the youth.  Fifty is the youth of old age. As mentioned before, I'm in-between but definitely still young. And, no, I don't have any hang ups.  If I do have any, it's being stuck in a time warp for two years. I wonder who remembers how these two seemingly unrelated objects are related.  Don't be afraid to show your age.   :P Note:  I just found this in some random site whose URL I no longer recall.

Biggest Face-Palm Moment...

The weekend started innocently enough. Slow night at work and an even slower start of the weekend.  It was so slow I decided to fix my hard drive problem which has been bothering me for the longest time now, corrupted clusters.  Undeletable deleted files. As soon as I made the decision, I started the process.  Running Windows's CHKDSK utility to start fixing it.  After 3 hours, it got fixed alright.  No more lost data around the hard drive.  Until I started checking the integrity of the various files I have. Rummaging through my 160GB drive, checking on the data I have in there, I discovered to my horror that I lost all the pictures I have ever taken from my trusty SE K800i!!!  ARGH!!!  Over four (4) years of pictures!  LOST!!!  Kaput! Disappeared!  :( I should have taken the time to back them all up before doing anything to my drive. I should have burned them all to a DVD.  I should have... I should have done... <sigh> Using Recuva, I tried to recover the deleted data.  After 5 hours of trying, no dice. The pictures are truly lost to the ether.  The only consolation I have, apart from the 2010 pictures, is that the more important ones have been uploaded to the website already.  So those are not completely lost. The 2010 pictures, though, they're gone. All gone.  :( Lesson learned.  Again.  Backup, backup and backup some more.  And never be lazy about it.  Darn it... Note:  This is how I am feeling right now...  So frustrated.

PPC Pasta!

There I was, just arrived home from work early in the morning.  Thin of funds with an equally thin cupboard and an angrily growling tummy.  Opening the refrigerator did me not much good, either.  Nothing was ready to eat or can be easily nuked within 2 minutes.  No junk food either.  Then a brilliant idea hit me!   [caption id="attachment_1781" align="alignright" width="210" caption="PPC Pasta!"]Pesto-Parmesan-Chorizo Pasta![/caption] PPC Pasta!  Yes!  Pesto-Parmesan-Chorizo Pasta, i.e.  That's what I'll make to eat.  What an idea.   I went about chopping up a bulb of garlic and 4 frozen pieces of my Mom's homemade chorizo.  Then I boiled 2 eggs.  Boiled me some pasta, too. There. Preliminary preparations are done. Once everything was cleaned and put away, I prepared my trusty old multi-cooker appliance and started some olive oil simmering in the pan.  Put in the garlic, waited until it turned brown then added in the chopped chorizos.  When everything was cooking along nicely I put in the pasta to the mix.  Saute style, my usual pasta cooking technique for that perfect al dente texture. Added fresh ground black pepper to taste and voila!  Done. With everything now on the plate, I poured a generous sprinkling of parmesan cheese and served with soft drinks.  I don't have wine, sorry.  ;) Ahhhh...  yummilicious! Anybody want to give it a try?  You can also put red Tabasco sauce for that sweet spicy chili tang.  :D

Robots Invent Their Own Language

ARGHHH!!!  Run for your lives!  Our robot overlords are coming!  The governator has produced a child that might just be the savior of the human race.  He's promised to be the one who will bring down Skynet in...  ah, 2031?

:D

via Slashdot by CmdrTaco on 5/18/11

An anonymous reader writes "One group of Australian researchers have managed to teach robots to do something that, until now, was the reserve of humans and a few other animals: they've taught them how to invent and use spoken language. The robots, called LingoDroids, are introduced to each other. In order to share information, they need to communicate. Since they don't share a common language, they do the next best thing: they make one up. The LingoDroids invent words to describe areas on their maps,! speak the word aloud to the other robot, and then find a way ! to connect the word and the place, the same way a human would point to themselves and speak their name to someone who doesn't speak their language."

Hello Again!

It has been a long while, hasn't it?  I know I haven't been writing as much the past few months.  I would like to say I have had some issues but that could get overly dramatic.  Though the past few months has seen quite a lot of events that are personally important.

For starters, I was alone the past Christmas season and so I had to report for work.  Which I haven't done since 2007.  It wasn't as bad as I imagined it would be as there was free food and even lechon.

Then in February one of my best friends passed away due to illness.  A sad month to be sure.  I kept track of him through my other friends back home who fed me information on the condition of his health.  I'm so sorry to lose him that way.  I've always thought that we would all grow old together.

Then there were some major changes at work starting to happen around that time, too, which I will have to decline ! to discuss out in the open.  Not that it's bad but, still, it's about work.   :D

My wife came to visit me and I finally took some time off work to relax and zone out.  We were even able to visit a popular spot up north for our mis-adventure.  It was the first time either of has gone north of this island in a very long time.  Southwards is easier for us but it was fun.  I got to test my car's health, too, running at speeds of <*toot*>kph...   ;)

Celebrated my birthday.  The big four oh.  Yea, I'm finally there.  For those familiar with my birthday and have questions, you might want to read this first before you ask them.  I find it saves me explanation time.  Suffice to say I'll be in a timewarp for the next two years.  As to how I celebrated my birthday, look here.

Most recently, too, another one of my best friends got married and also my cousin.  I'm happy for all of them, of course.  I just wish I was there to celebrate with them.

From this point we should all be caught up now.  I can't really promise to write more often.  Not at this time.  But I will do the best I can to keep this blog up to date and to give you some neat and useful tips when I happen to cross some.  :D

This is Bull

So my sister enrolls in an art class and she bought a canvas to draw on , so when the canvas got home brother and I scratched it (lightly) on the plastic , my sister sees us , she tell on mom and mom says that I was jealous . Well yeah because I have been asking mom for a canvas and paint for me to paint on a long time ago and my sister doesn't and now she has one? My mom says it's my fault co'z i didn't enroll in the class , but what she doesn't know is that I , draw for a hobby , you know for fun , pleasure . So you think this is fair? You know maybe that's why I hate my sister so bad and I hope mom realizes that soon co'z believe me , me and my brother had this feeling years ago and mom never listens to us . Plus , my sister doesn't even diserve to have affection maybe she does but she got too used to it and now she's irresponsible , dirty , seldom takes notice in hygiene and is mostly the co'z of mom's head ache , yet , she is mom's little angel . This just , you know , ! this really boils me and affects my school work and other stuff . *Sigh* with this emotional problems I have , guess I won't live to be 30 ...

A Free Method to Schedule Facebook Updates

Earlier this month, one of my favorite blogs, Make Use Of (.com), published a post about five (5) free methods for scheduling facebooks updates.  You know, for when you want to make updates at a time when you know you won't have access to the internet.  Or just to fool people that you're somewhere else when you're not.  ;) I mention this because I want to introduce a sixth (6th) method using a combination of GMail, Baydin's Boomerang extension for Chrome (and Firefox), and either Posterous or TheFriendMail.  I'm using Chrome so I'll use that to illustrate this to you. Step 1: Download Chrome (or Firefox) if you aren't using it already. Step 2: Go to Baydin's website and signup for Boomerang.  Download the extension when it tells you to and install. Step 3: Reload Gmail. If all's well with the installation, you should have a link to Boomerang in the upper right hand corner of gmail, right next to your google account name.
